Clinical Supervision
Clinical supervision aims to help supervisees gain confidence in their abilities as well as insight into areas of growth in a safe and supportive environment. Supervision is a place to develop the necessary skills and practice of counseling to protect one’s clients and become a competent practitioner.
Active Wellness Counselor Kathryn Kelly provides clinical supervision for North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associates (LCMHCAs).

Background
Session Fees & Length of Service
I have counseling work experience in community agency, crisis intervention, and college counseling settings. I have experience with adolescents and adults, providing personal, psychoeducational and psychosocial counseling services. Additionally, I have experience working with adults in crisis and with substance use/addiction problems.
My theoretical orientation to counseling is based in existential theory. Modalities that I use most often with clients align well with an Existential framework and include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-Based Interventions. I see the counselor/client relationship as a partnership based on genuineness, empathy, and active collaboration. I believe that therapy works best when the process is creative and customized to a person’s unique needs.
My approach to supervision follows the developmental models of supervision, which adjusts for and to the level of expertise of the supervisee. I strive to be intentional and prepared for every supervision session. With that stated, I also attend to the supervisory relationship and roles depending on a supervisee’s developmental needs, which requires flexibility.
I may use a variety of roles with the supervisee, such as teacher, counselor, or consultant, addressing overall developmental goals in addition to the expressed goals and identified performance issues. Supervision goals will be collaboratively developed and revised with input from the supervisee. Supervision may focus on interventions/techniques to use with clients, case conceptualization, professional behaviors, or the counselor as both a person and change agent. The overarching aim of supervision is for the supervisee to gain more complex and integrative assessment, conceptualization, and intervention skills. Supervision also includes goals of increased self-awareness and may involve examining personal behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that are elicited by a client. However, it must be stated that supervision and personal counseling are distinct activities and processes, despite any attendance to personal issues and reactions and overlap in the techniques employed. Any issues that are unrelated to the supervisee’s efficacy with clients or that may be identified by the supervisee or supervisor as needing further attention are to be referred to a different, qualified professional; providing any therapeutic interventions beyond the scope of the client must be precluded. Lastly, supervision involves evaluation, which is incompatible to the goals of personal counseling.
Live observation and/or audio/video recordings are the predominant modes of reviewing counseling skills for supervision. Supervisees will be provided feedback frequently and will be made aware of any performance issues in a timely manner. Additionally, supervisees will be provided with options for remediation, if necessary, via written contract and procedures of due process (with the exception of certain gross ethical violations). Adherence to the ethical standards of ACA and NBCC and any supervisory directives is expected and a basis for evaluation. Supervisees are provided copies of any written summative evaluations.
Supervision cost is based on the modality of supervision (individual or group). Individual supervision sessions are one hour at $100 per session. Group supervision sessions are limited to two supervisees, last one hour, and cost $80 per session. I accept payment via credit card through Stripe via SimplePractice for services rendered. You will be invoiced for services the day of your supervision appointment. Currently, all supervision sessions will be conducted virtually through SimplePractice.
